It was originally codenamed "Majel" after Majel Barrett, the wife of Gene Roddenberry and the voice of computer systems in the Star Trek franchise it was also codenamed "assistant". In late 2011, reports surfaced that Google was enhancing its product Google Voice Search for the next version of Android. Unlike Google Now, however, Assistant can engage in a two-way dialogue with the user. At Google I/O 2016, Google showcased its new intelligent personal assistant Google Assistant, in some ways an evolution of Google Now.
Since 2015, Google gradually phased out reference to "Google Now" in the Google app, largely removing the remaining use of "Now" in October 2016, including replacing Now cards with Feed. Popular Science named Google Now the "Innovation of the Year" for 2012. Later, however, they removed the notification center entirely from Chrome. In 2014, Google added Now cards to the notification center in Chrome OS and in the Chrome browser. The service became available for iOS on April 29, 2013, without most of its features. Google first included Google Now in Android 4.1 ("Jelly Bean"), which launched on July 9, 2012, and the Galaxy Nexus smartphone was first to support it. Google Now branding is no longer used, but the functionality continues in the Google app and its discover tab.

Material You design in Android 12 Image: Google Today at Google’s Android Developer Summit, the company announced that Material You is available in Jetpack Compose, so app designers can more easily adopt the look in their own products. We’ve already gotten a hint of how the look affects usability across the updated OS and Google’s own apps, but now the focus is expanding to reach more of the apps made by others.
Android 12 has launched along with Google’s new Pixel 6 lineup and brings with it a new look that Android VP of product management Sameer Samat called “the biggest design change in Android’s history.” That’s in reference to Material You, which applies a new set of principles for creating interfaces, in addition to changes that will help Android adjust to bigger screens.
